Road User Charge (RUC)

What is Road User Charges (RUC)?

Anyone using New Zealand’s roads contributes towards their upkeep. Most road users pay levies in the prices of their fuel. Others, such as drivers of light diesel vehicles, and diesel-powered heavy vehicles like trucks, pay through road user charges (RUC).

The revenue collected from road user charges is dedicated to the National Land Transport Fund (NLTF). The NLTF funds road improvements and maintenance, public transport, road safety, and walking and cycling.

Road User Charges (RUC) only applies to New Zealand based customers.

Road User Charges in Gearbox

Within Gearbox you can track Road User charges and apply offsets when transferring units between vehicles. You can configure the RUC Expiry Kilometres within a vehicle and track how many RUC kilometers you have on the Road User Page.

The more kilometres the vehicle travels the more RUC kilometres it will use.

Adding a Hub Reading

To manually add a Hub Reading under the Maintenance module go to Vehicles > Road User Charge and click on Add Hub Reading.

When creating the new hub reading record fill in the following:

  • Vehicles: The vehicle which the record it created against
  • Hub Reading Date: The date of the reading
  • Reading: The value shown on the hubometer

Once the record is saved the reading entered will appear as the Latest Hubometer reading and will advise how many RUC kilometers are remaining for the vehicle.

Configuring RUC Offsets

The Road User Charge page will display all vehicles within your fleet and their RUC Expiry and current readings.

To configure a RUC offset follow the steps below.

  1. Within a vehicle click on the Settings > Configuration > RUC Offset set your offset. Click Save and Close to save changes.
Gearbox will configure the new RUC Expiry depending on the offset configured.

+ RUC Offset = [Offset + RUC Expiry]
    – RUC Offset = [Offset – RUC Expiry]

    RUC Offset = 500

    RUC Offset = -500

  2. Navigate to Maintenance > Vehicles > Road User Charge to view changes.
    RUC Offset = 500

    RUC Offset = -500
