Fuel Economy by Month report

Purpose

The purpose of this report is to display the average fuel economy by month, using the “End Date” of the date period you select. This knowledge base article has been written to clarify the intricacies of the report.

Report Logic

In order for Gearbox to determine the average fuel economy, it needs to ascertain and divide a vehicle’s highest mileage reading by its lowest mileage reading. As it is not guaranteed if a Fuel record will be created for the first day of each month, Gearbox will grab the highest mileage reading from the previous month. This value is subtracted against the reporting month’s highest mileage reading, this is how the average fuel economy is provided.

However, if there is a reading on the 1st of the month Gearbox will use this Fuel record’s mileage reading as the lowest value and subtract it from the end of the month Fuel record’s mileage reading. This will provide the average distance traveled for the given month.

Example 1

Using the diagram above the vehicle has three Fuel records for December 2019 and three Fuel records for January 2020. However, because there is no Fuel record for the 1st January 2020 Gearbox utilises the mileage reading from 31st December 2020 (257,283 Kms) and has it subtracted from 31st January 2020 reading (258,784 Kms) giving 1,501 Kms as the distance travelled. Gearbox then adds all litres consumed for January 2020.

Using this data Gearbox then divides distance travelled by litres of fuel consumed to provide an average fuel economy value of 1.75 Litres consumed per Kilometre.

Example 2

Using Vehicle 1 as an example the below will advise how Gearbox calculates values presented in the report.
